Illustration for Psalm 46: God Is Our Refuge

Psalm 46

God Is Our Refuge

Even if the whole world fell apart — mountains crumbling into the sea — we don't need to be afraid because God is our safe place! God lives in His city like a river that keeps it full of joy. He says: 'Be still and know that I am God.'

  1. 1God is our refuge and strength, an ever-present help in times of trouble.
  2. 2Therefore we will not fear, though the earth is transformed and the mountains are thrown into the heart of the sea,
  3. 3though its waters roar and foam and the mountains quake at the surging waters.
  4. 4There is a river whose streams make glad the city of God, the holy dwelling of the Most High.
  5. 5God is within her; she will not fall. God will help her when morning dawns.
  6. 6Nations rage and kingdoms fall; He lifts His voice, and the earth melts.
  7. 7The LORD of Hosts is with us; the God of Jacob is our fortress.
  8. 8Come, behold the works of the LORD, what desolations He has brought upon the earth.
  9. 9He causes wars to cease throughout the earth; He breaks the bow and shatters the spear; He burns the chariot with fire.
  10. 10"Be still and know that I am God; I will be exalted among the nations, I will be exalted over the earth."
  11. 11The LORD of Hosts is with us; the God of Jacob is our fortress.

What it means

When the world feels like it's falling apart — like earthquakes, floods, or big scary problems — God is our safe place. He tells us to be still and know that He is God. We can stop panicking and trust that He is in control.

A little prayer

God, when everything around me feels shaky and scary, help me to be still and know that You are God. You are my fortress. I will not be afraid because You are with me. Amen.
