Psalm 46
God Is Our Refuge
Even if the whole world fell apart — mountains crumbling into the sea — we don't need to be afraid because God is our safe place! God lives in His city like a river that keeps it full of joy. He says: 'Be still and know that I am God.'
- 1God is our refuge and strength, an ever-present help in times of trouble.
- 2Therefore we will not fear, though the earth is transformed and the mountains are thrown into the heart of the sea,
- 3though its waters roar and foam and the mountains quake at the surging waters.
- 4There is a river whose streams make glad the city of God, the holy dwelling of the Most High.
- 5God is within her; she will not fall. God will help her when morning dawns.
- 6Nations rage and kingdoms fall; He lifts His voice, and the earth melts.
- 7The LORD of Hosts is with us; the God of Jacob is our fortress.
- 8Come, behold the works of the LORD, what desolations He has brought upon the earth.
- 9He causes wars to cease throughout the earth; He breaks the bow and shatters the spear; He burns the chariot with fire.
- 10"Be still and know that I am God; I will be exalted among the nations, I will be exalted over the earth."
- 11The LORD of Hosts is with us; the God of Jacob is our fortress.
What it means
When the world feels like it's falling apart — like earthquakes, floods, or big scary problems — God is our safe place. He tells us to be still and know that He is God. We can stop panicking and trust that He is in control.
A little prayer
God, when everything around me feels shaky and scary, help me to be still and know that You are God. You are my fortress. I will not be afraid because You are with me. Amen.
