Psalm 20
A Prayer for Victory
This psalm is a prayer for the king before a big battle. The people ask God to help and protect their leader. The most important lesson is that real strength doesn't come from horses or armies — it comes from trusting in God!
- 1May the LORD answer you in your day of trouble; may the name of the God of Jacob protect you.
- 2May He send you help from the sanctuary and grant you support from Zion.
- 3May He remember all your offerings and regard your burnt offerings with favor.
- 4May He grant you the desire of your heart and make all your plans succeed.
- 5We will shout for joy at your victory and lift up our banners in the name of our God. May the LORD fulfill all your requests.
- 6Now I know that the LORD saves His anointed; He answers him from His holy heaven with the saving power of His right hand.
- 7Some trust in chariots and some in horses, but we trust in the name of the LORD our God.
- 8They collapse and fall, but we rise and stand firm.
- 9O LORD, save the king! Answer us when we call!
What it means
When we face something hard, it's tempting to trust in our own strength, money, or cleverness — our 'chariots and horses.' But real confidence comes from trusting in God's name. He answers those who call on Him.
A little prayer
Lord, when I face hard things, help me not to trust in my own strength but in Your name. You answer when I call. Be my confidence and my victory today. Amen.
