Psalm 144

God Is My Rock

David praises God who trains him for battle like a warrior. But he also wonders: what are we compared to the great God? We are like a breath or a shadow! He prays for victory and for his people to be blessed with abundance and peace.

  1. 1Blessed be the LORD, my Rock, who trains my hands for war, my fingers for battle.
  2. 2He is my loving God, my fortress, my stronghold and my deliverer, my shield in whom I take refuge, who subdues peoples under me.
  3. 3O LORD, what is man that You care for him, or the son of man that You think of him?
  4. 4Man is like a breath; his days are like a passing shadow.
  5. 5Bend down Your heavens, O LORD, and come down; touch the mountains, so that they smoke.
  6. 6Flash Your lightning and scatter the enemy; shoot Your arrows and rout them.
  7. 7Stretch out Your hand from on high; rescue me and deliver me out of great waters, from the hands of foreigners
  8. 8whose mouths speak deceit, whose right hands are raised in falsehood.
  9. 9I will sing to You a new song, O God; on a ten-stringed lyre I will make music to You,
  10. 10to the One who gives salvation to kings, who delivers His servant David from the deadly sword.
  11. 11Deliver me and rescue me from the hands of foreigners whose mouths speak deceit and whose right hands are raised in falsehood.
  12. 12Then our sons in their youth will be like well-nurtured plants, our daughters will be like pillars carved to adorn a palace.
  13. 13Our storehouses will be filled with every kind of supply; our sheep will multiply by thousands, by tens of thousands in our fields;
  14. 14our oxen will draw heavy loads. There will be no breach in the walls, no going into captivity, no cry of distress in our streets.
  15. 15Blessed are the people of whom these things are true; blessed are the people whose God is the LORD.
