Psalm 107

Give Thanks to the LORD

This psalm tells four stories of people who were in trouble — lost in the desert, locked in prison, sick, and caught in a storm at sea. In every case they cried out to God and He saved them! The response is always: give thanks to the LORD for His amazing love.

  1. 1Give thanks to the LORD, for He is good; His loving devotion endures forever.
  2. 2Let the redeemed of the LORD say so—those He redeemed from the hand of the foe,
  3. 3those He gathered from the lands, from the east and the west, from the north and the south.
  4. 4Some wandered in the desert wasteland, finding no way to a city where they could settle.
  5. 5They were hungry and thirsty; their souls grew faint within them.
  6. 6Then they cried out to the LORD in their trouble, and He delivered them from their distress.
  7. 7He led them on a straight path to a city where they could settle.
  8. 8Let them give thanks to the LORD for His loving devotion and His wonderful deeds for mankind.
  9. 9For He has satisfied the thirsty and filled the hungry with good things.
  10. 10Some sat in darkness and the shadow of death, prisoners in iron chains of affliction,
  11. 11for they had rebelled against the words of God and despised the counsel of the Most High.
  12. 12So He humbled their hearts with hard labor; they stumbled and no one helped them up.
  13. 13Then they cried out to the LORD in their trouble, and He saved them from their distress.
  14. 14He brought them out of darkness and the shadow of death and broke their chains apart.
  15. 15Let them give thanks to the LORD for His loving devotion and His wonderful deeds for mankind.
  16. 16For He has shattered the bronze gates and cut through the iron bars.
  17. 17Fools were afflicted because of their rebellious ways and their iniquities.
  18. 18They loathed all kinds of food and drew near to the gates of death.
  19. 19Then they cried out to the LORD in their trouble, and He saved them from their distress.
  20. 20He sent His word and healed them; He rescued them from the pit.
  21. 21Let them give thanks to the LORD for His loving devotion and His wonderful deeds for mankind.
  22. 22Let them offer sacrifices of thanksgiving and announce His works with joyful singing.
  23. 23Those who go down to the sea in ships, who conduct business on the great waters—
  24. 24they have seen the works of the LORD, His wonders on the deep.
  25. 25For He spoke and stirred up a tempest that lifted up the waves of the sea.
  26. 26They rose to the sky; they descended to the depths. Their courage melted away in their peril.
  27. 27They reeled and staggered like drunken men, and all their skill was swallowed up.
  28. 28Then they cried out to the LORD in their trouble, and He brought them out of their distress.
  29. 29He stilled the storm to a whisper, and the waves of the sea were hushed.
  30. 30They rejoiced when the waters grew quiet, and He guided them to their desired haven.
  31. 31Let them give thanks to the LORD for His loving devotion and His wonderful deeds for mankind.
  32. 32Let them exalt Him in the assembly of the people and praise Him in the council of the elders.
  33. 33He turns rivers into a desert, springs of water into thirsty ground,
  34. 34and fruitful land into salty wasteland, because of the wickedness of those who dwell there.
  35. 35He turns a desert into a pool of water and dry land into flowing springs.
  36. 36There He brings the hungry to dwell, and they build a city to inhabit.
  37. 37They sow fields and plant vineyards that yield a fruitful harvest.
  38. 38He blesses them, and they multiply greatly; He does not let their herds diminish.
  39. 39Yet they decrease and are brought low through oppression, calamity, and sorrow.
  40. 40He pours contempt on nobles and makes them wander in a trackless wasteland.
  41. 41But He lifts the needy out of their affliction and multiplies their families like flocks.
  42. 42The upright see it and rejoice, but all the wicked shut their mouths.
  43. 43Whoever is wise will observe these things and ponder the loving devotion of the LORD.
