Shapes & Geometry
Circles, squares, triangles, and where they hide in real life.
Flat shapes around us
A circle is perfectly round with no straight sides at all. A square has 4 straight sides that are all the same length, and a triangle has 3 straight sides. A rectangle has 4 straight sides too, but the sides across from each other match instead of all four being equal.
Sides and corners
One easy way to tell shapes apart is to count their sides and corners. A triangle has 3 sides and 3 corners. A square or rectangle has 4 sides and 4 corners. A circle is special: it has no straight sides and no corners at all.
Shapes in the real world
Shapes are hiding everywhere once you start looking. A pizza is a circle cut into triangle slices. A window is often a rectangle. A stop sign has 8 sides, which makes it an octagon. Look around your room right now, how many shapes can you find?
