All substances are made up of matter and the fundamental unit of matter is the atom.
Elements are represented as the squares you see on the periodic table. Each elements consists of one type of atom
Atoms are made of of 3 smaller things:
• Protons
• Neutrons
• Electrons
Protons and Neutrons are located in the center, or nucleus, of an atom
Protons are positively charged (+),
Neutrons have no charge and are neutral
Electrons move around outside the nucleus and are negatively charged (-)
Electrons move about so fast, that they form clouds that surround the nucleus of an atom. Those clouds are specific distances away from the nucleus and are generally organized into shells.
The atomic number is the number of protons an atom has. the number of protons an atom has determines its identity. So the atomic number is unique for each element.
The atomic weight (also referred to as the atomic mass) is the number of protons and neutrons in an atom.
On the periodic table, The atomic number is the number usually located in the upper left corner of an element’s square. The atomic weight is the number located on the bottom.
