What Does Food Storage Have to Do With the Church?

As members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, we know how important it is that we prepare for trials that we could potentially face in this life. Our church leaders are always recommending that we prioritize food storage of some sort. We don’t know the future, and we never know when there will be limited resources. So it’s best that we prepare for that so that we can take care of our families.

Our Father in Heaven never wants us to not be able to take care of ourselves or our families. He advises us many times throughout the scriptures to be prepared in every way for anything that can happen, from economic crises to natural disasters to war, etc.

Food Storage with Jesus: Does He Really Care About My Emergency Preparation?

“Food Storage With Jesus” is probably not the title you would expect for a food storage blog post. You may be wondering, is food storage something I can really do with Jesus? Does He care about the physical well-being of my family?

I testify that the answer is yes! Consider these scriptures:

Therefore the Lord himself shall give you a sign; Behold, a virgin shall conceive, and bear a son, and shall call his name Immanuel (God with us).

Isaiah 7:14

Father, I will that they also, whom thou hast given me, be with me where I am; that they may behold my glory, which thou hast given me: for thou lovedst me before the foundation of the world.

John 17:20-24

And Enoch and all his people walked with God, and he dwelt in the midst of Zion; and it came to pass that Zion was not, for God received it up into his own bosom;

Moses 7:69

Behold, I (Jesus) stand at the door, and knock: if any man hear my voice, and open the door, I will come in to him, and will sup with him, and he with me.

Revelation 3:20

These scriptures are just a small sampling of the evidence that Jesus wants to be with us in all things. That means the physical things too, like providing for yourself and your family or preparing for and surviving emergencies. He is ready to help us prepare for and weather mortal challenges that come our way. If we choose to do it with Him, we can find great spiritual miracles happening in our souls.

But wait, shouldn’t I just have faith in Jesus and He will miraculously provide for me?

He certainly can work miracles for you, but the way He performs them does not always appear miraculous. Let’s consider the story of Noah, who was commanded to build an ark to save himself and his family from the Flood. The Apostle Paul said this of the story: “By faith Noah, being warned of God of things not seen as yet, moved with fear, prepared an ark to the saving of his house” (Hebrews 11:6-7). Noah’s faith was demonstrated by his trust in God’s warning, which was evident by his obedience and work in preparing the ark. 

So yes, sometimes Jesus miraculously multiplies bread and fish to feed thousands. Other times He warns us and expects us to do some work (like build a giant boat and fill it with food, supplies, animals, and family). Either way it happens, God and His Beloved Son are the common denominator. They save us in the perfect way for our growth, learning and relationship with Them. They love hard-working Noah and his family just as much as the 5,000 who were given free bread. We must have faith in that love and in their commandments to do small, simple, everyday things that may be the way They are saving us.

In conclusion, my answer to the question: “Does Jesus really care about my emergency preparation?” is “Yes!” Jesus cares deeply about every aspect of our lives. He lived a mortal life with a physical body so he could provide solutions and strength, hope and healing to every problem or struggle (see Alma 7:11-13). His love and power to help us are infinite and ready, if we will just let Him in.
