Fruit of the Spirit: Kindness in the Bible

Over the last few months, we have been diving into each of the fruits of Spirit so we can better understand what it is to embody these qualities. Today, we are talking about kindness. What are some examples of kindness in the Bible, and how do we show kindness to others in our lives?

The dictionary defines kindness as being friendly, generous, and considerate. This quality is one that God Himself shows us and is a quality that many people in the Bible have. As Christians, we are called to show kindness to everyone around us. But how do we do that? Let’s discuss this.

God’s Kindness in our Daily Lives

God has shown us that kindness is one of the main qualities we should embody by example. He shows us the importance of kindness in how He provides for us with rain and sun (Acts 14:17), and most importantly his kindness in sending His only son to die for our sins (John 3:16). Romans 5:8 says that “God showed His love for us in that while we were still sinners, Christ dies for us.”

Examples of Kindness in the Bible

Throughout the Bible, there are many examples of loving your enemies. Kindness, humility, and love are all things we see in Jesus’ parables. The good Samaritan is an example of loving our enemies and doing good to everyone around us.

Ruth in the Bible showed immense kindness to her mother-in-law by going with her back to her homeland, and David showed Johnathan’s son kindness because of the friendship he had with Johnathan.

Showing Kindness

So what practical ways can we show kindness to those around us? Well, we can start by choosing our words carefully like James 3 speaks about. Our tongues are as powerful as the tiny spark that starts a forest fire. Another way we can show kindness is by helping those around us. Offer to serve the people in your household by doing things around the house.
