Challenges in Discipleship and How To Overcome Them

[ad_1]

As we talk about discipleship this year, it is important to acknowledge that we will encounter roadblocks on our journey. What stops us from spiritual growth?

In this blog, let’s delve into common obstacles that stop us from following Jesus, and talk about how we can overcome them.

Common Challenges in Discipleship

Lack of Consistency in Spiritual Practices

Maintaining consistency in spiritual practices is a shared challenge. All of us have struggled with staying consistent. Whether setting aside time for prayer or reflection, a consistent pattern fosters a deepened connection with God. That is why it is important to take time out of your day every day to spend time with God. The Bible teaches us how to pray in Matthew 6:5-6, “5 “And when you pray, do not be like the hypocrites, for they love to pray standing in the synagogues and on the street corners to be seen by others. Truly I tell you, they have received their reward in full. 6 But when you pray, go into your room, close the door and pray to your Father, who is unseen. Then your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you.”

Distractions in the Digital Age

In the age of technology, distractions can hinder discipleship. Our phones are constantly sucking us in and taking up our time and attention. We advocate for intentional technology use, viewing it as a tool rather than a distraction. Setting digital boundaries and mindful practices helps maintain a focused pursuit of faith.

Addressing Doubts and Questioning Faith

Doubts are inherent in our spiritual journey. At Oak Ridge Baptist Church, we recognize the importance of validating concerns. In an atmosphere of openness, we encourage honest dialogue about doubts. We believe this creates space for seeking answers and reinforcing our faith foundations. If you have questions or doubts about your faith, please feel free to attend one of our bible study sessions so we can talk in a nonjudgemental manner with you.

Balancing Spiritual Growth with Daily Life

Integrating discipleship into daily routines poses a challenge. To strike a harmonious balance, we offer practical time management tips, emphasizing small, intentional efforts that contribute to a fulfilling spiritual life.

Overcoming Challenges

Cultivating a Supportive Community

Facing challenges within a supportive community is crucial. Accountability and encouragement are foundational. By fostering openness and trust, we actively promote participation in small groups, nurturing environments where individuals strengthen their commitment to the discipleship journey.

Utilizing Technology as a Tool, Not a Distraction

We view technology as a facilitator, not a hindrance. Embracing its positive aspects enhances spiritual growth. Advocating for clear digital boundaries ensures technology benefits our discipleship commitment.

Seeking Guidance from Mentors and Leaders

Mentorship is pivotal in navigating challenges. Oak Ridge Baptist Church emphasizes seeking guidance from experienced mentors and leaders, fostering trust and shared wisdom in supportive relationships.

Embracing Vulnerability and Authenticity

Vulnerability and authenticity are cherished within our community. We encourage safe spaces for individuals to express challenges openly, strengthening fellowship bonds. Through shared vulnerabilities, we discover the transformative power of unity, reinforcing our commitment to discipleship.
