Can You Lose Your Salvation?

The Gift of Salvation: A Foundation of Faith

As Baptists, we firmly believe that salvation is a gift from God, freely given to all who place their faith in Jesus Christ. It is not something we can earn through our own efforts or good works. The Apostle Paul, in his letter to the Ephesians, eloquently states, “For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith—and this is not from yourselves, it is the gift of God—not by works so that no one can boast” (Ephesians 2:8-9).

Eternal Security: Once Saved, Always Saved

One of the core doctrines within Baptist theology is the belief in eternal security. Once a person genuinely accepts Jesus Christ as their Savior, they are eternally secure in their salvation. This assurance is rooted in the promises of Jesus Himself: “I give them eternal life, and they shall never perish; no one will snatch them out of my hand. My Father, who has given them to me, is greater than all; no one can snatch them out of my Father’s hand” (John 10:28-29). Our salvation rests securely in the hands of a loving and faithful God.

 

Paul also states in Romans 8:38-39, “For I am convinced that neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons,[a] neither the present nor the future, nor any powers, 39 neither height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord.”

A Relationship with God: The Key to Assurance

While our salvation is secure, it is essential to understand that a genuine relationship with God is not devoid of responsibility. We are called to actively nurture our relationship with Him through faith, repentance, and obedience. Although good works do not save us, they are the natural outpouring of a transformed life. As James, the brother of Jesus, wrote, “Faith by itself, if it is not accompanied by action, is dead” (James 2:17). Engaging in prayer, reading the Bible, and participating in Christian fellowship help strengthen our assurance and deepen our relationship with God.

Wrestling with Doubt: Responding to Uncertainty

Doubts and questions about salvation may arise in our spiritual journey. It is important to recognize that doubts are a normal part of faith and can be addressed. When wrestling with uncertainty, we encourage you to seek biblical truth, consult spiritual mentors, and rely on the guidance of the Holy Spirit. Engage in open dialogue with church leaders and fellow believers who can offer support, encouragement, and answers to your questions.

Living Faithfully: The Fruit of Salvation

As recipients of God’s amazing grace, our lives should reflect the love and teachings of Jesus Christ. Salvation transforms us from the inside out, shaping our attitudes, actions, and priorities. Our faith is not just a one-time event but a lifelong journey of growth and discipleship. We are called to pursue holiness, engage in acts of service, and share the good news of salvation with others.
